Wearing your jewellery

At Hanratty’s, we ensure that our jewellery is crafted to the highest standards so as to last our customers, for many years.  However, care must be taken of your jewellery, as it is not indestructible and is subject to wear and tear.  It is worth being mindful of how and when you wear your jewellery, in order to help preserve the life of your precious pieces.

We would recommend removing your jewellery while exercising, physical work or heavy lifting.  Also, during certain sports, showering, sleeping, gardening – these are some of the activities where it is possible to accidentally damage, scuff, catch or pull your jewellery on something.  It is amazing how over time, your jewellery can wear, bend or break from, e.g. pulls or getting hit here and there on hard or rough surfaces. The claws that hold in the stones in your jewellery, e.g. cubic gems or diamonds, can loosen over time or pull, if caught on something.

When you’re not wearing your jewellery, store it safely in a soft interior jewellery box.

Cleaning your Jewellery

Silver jewellery may tarnish, turning brown or black over time, due to air-borne sulphurs and chlorides.  To avoid this, wipe with a jewellery cleaning cloth or solution when it is not being worn.  Gold may also turn slightly brown over time, it can be restored to its bright colour with a jewellery dip solution or a jewellery cleaning cloth.  White gold will start to appear slightly yellow over time, our services include rhodium plating and polishing service which will restore its lustre!

To clean your diamonds at home you can use warm water, washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, being extra careful to not clean near your sink or waste bin.  We can also provide a professional cleaning service in store - where we not only clean but inspect your ring to make sure it is in its best condition possible.  Speak to our staff.
